In Part 3 of The 4 Factors of Greatness!, we discussed POWERing while FOCUSing and CONTROLing. In this Part 4, the last of this series on the 4 Factors of Greatness!, we will finish up by discussing BALANCE.
BALANCE is the acronym for the instruction to, “Build and leverage a nicely coordinated ensemble.” Balance relates to using your power, focus, and control in a coordinated way to keep all of your plates spinning simultaneously.
All of us have a variety of things we want to do in order to do what is the best thing in the present circumstances of our lives for the optimal balance of the highest priority and largest number of people, places, and things with whom and which we have relationships and for whom and which and to whom and which our values make us responsible. In order to be Great! All the time!, you have to build a life comprised of the select projects on which you are choosing to work and how to leverage each of all your resources so you can apply not only as much as is required, but also, and more importantly, only as little as is required of each type of your life’s precious resources, to complete each project in your ensemble, preferably ahead of schedule, under budget, and right the first time around.
If you try to do absolutely everything for every person, place, and thing you think might have some right to demand your attention, then you are going to run yourself ragged until you drop dead like the proverbial horse being run to death in an old western. You are just going to get all lathered up, running until you cannot run any more, and then you are going to fall over, foaming at the mouth, trapping your rider’s leg between your body and the ground and both of you are going to die, unprotected, in the blazing sun. Not a very good result.
If you do nothing but invest your resource of time in a project without investing your self, effort, energy, emotion, intellect, property and people, then you will be much less effective than if you would have focused the powerful investment of all your resources to get the most effective and efficient outcome you desire. Also, not a very good result.
If however, you PEEL your life down to a manageable existence that is capable of being maintained reasonably, then you will be able gather, use, and recreate your life’s precious resources in a never-ending lifecycle of balanced living.
So, proceed only with every resource; follow one course until success, critique oneself nicely to correct occasional lapses; and build and leverage a nicely coordinated ensemble of things you want to do and resources you want to use to do them.
In the meantime, you GOTTABGATT! so go out there today and be Great! All the time!
